Minot Flood Fight 2011

The following are pictures Amy took of flooding that occurred along the
Mouse river in Minot, ND. The flooding started topping the dikes on
Wednesday, June 22, 2011. It was feared the level would be as high as the
infamous "Mouse that Roared" in 1969 when the river crested at 5,570 CFS
(cubic feet per second). This is about 1,555 feet above sea level.

Today, the river is over 1,561 feet above sea level. This is a little
over 3 feet higher than the previous high set over 120 years ago and is the
highest Minot residents have ever seen. To put this into perspective, the
river was never expected to go over 5,000 CFS. With the flow at over
29,000 CFS, people are experiencing a 600% increase.

Our hearts and thoughts go out to the thousands of people in Minot and
many tens to hundreds of thousands more as this water travels to the
Missouri river and into the Mississippi river that the Mouse feeds.
To try to find some silver lining in all this, North Dakotans have shown
the rest of the world how we pull together and help one another as the
number of volunteers have soared to sandbag areas, assist flood victims in
relocating their things and providing needed housing.
